(( Lolz. ))
Elise was shaking, even in the jacket and fleece pants she'd bought at the store for when the nights got cold. She hadn't expected it to be this cool tonight, and the wind didn't make things any better. But she wasn't about to turn the raft around and head back to the camp; she wanted to see if anything really would happen - and what Rose's face would look like when her sister realized which one had come out being right.
"It's frigid out here," Rose grumbled. "Can't I just go to bed?"
Elise rolled her eyes. "Oh, suck it up," she laughed. "You act sooooo tough when you get wounds, yet the minute you start feeling chilly, you whine like a baby!" She grinned and gently cuffed her twin over the head. (( Ha. I'd forgotten they were twins. Now I don't have to use "her sister" all the time. x] ))
Elise sighed when Rose started rambling in Spanish; she hated it when her sister spoke in the other language, which she couldn't tell apart from jibberish. She knew Rose did it just to play on her nerves, so she tried her hardest to ignore the unfamiliar words.
"Let's go into that lagoon," she suggested, pointing at the vine-like branches of willow trees that overhung the entrance of a quiet river. "I think we'll be able to see the moon well from there. Then we can do all the breathing we want." She quoted Rose's earlier words with emphasis, so she would know Elise was repeating what she'd said. "To the lagoon?" she questioned.

"Lagoon it is," Rose said, and dipped the stick that they were using as an oar into the water. Three strokes on one side, three on the other, repeat for whatever-amount-of-minutes. The boat slowly crawled towards the curtain of vines, and eventually creeped through.
She gasped as a large gust of wind rocketed against her face like a broad razorblade. It was even more "frio" out here for no apparent reason. Yet her sister had gotten under her skin with the baby comment ((haha, Rose has so much pride xD)), so she bit her tongue to keep from complaining again.
The boat drifted over to the center of the lagoon, and they came to a stop, floating directly under the moon. "Breathe deep," she said with a hint of bitterness. She inhaled dramatically and held it for several seconds, and then exhaled with a great whoosh.
Elise glared at her and rolled her eyes. "Ha, ha. Funny," she muttered sourly. ((This powerplaying is a really bad habit I've developed... Let me know when I start to do it too much.))
Rose gave her an innocent, oversweet smile. They stayed still for countless minutes, shivering and "doing all the breathing they wanted." Nothing happened.
Finally, "See? Told'ja. It was a dream. Now can I go to bed now?"
No sooner had the words left her mouth in a white puff of mist than she suddenly froze. Her blood felt like ice in her veins, and the temperature seemed to drop further than ever before. Elise was having a similar reaction; unable to so much as shiver. Paralyzed to anything but...breathing.
The wind whistled in the trees, sounding like whispers. Rose gasped as the "whispers" started to form in English. No, impossible...! It was her imagination.
"This is your last breath," the voices murmured. "You die tonight. Reborn as what you truly are."
Rose cast a terrified glance at her sister. She struggled to move, but the paralysis had become involuntary.
"Daughters of the moon, daughters of the moon," the voices chanted. "Daughters of the moon, daughters of the moon, DAUGHTERS OF THE MOON!"
Rose screamed as a ripping pain tore through her mouth. She tasted blood, irony and warm, dripping from her lips horrifically--and...wonderfully.
Her eyes snapped open. The sun was glittering above her, blinding her with its cursed brightness. She sat up, stretching, thinking about that terrifying dream.
Wait...
Although her sister was beside her, they weren't in the tent.
They were on the raft.
They were drifting aimlessly on the lake, sprawled over the banded wood disgracefully. She laughed nervously and started to jostle Elise.
"Elise. Elise. Wake up. It looks like we accidentally...uh, sleep-walked onto the, uh...raft..."
((Yesh, they are vampires now, and no, those stupid turn-into-bats and damaged-by-light things don't exist in this story.))

((Since we only power-play each other's characters a teeny bit, I don't really mind. Haha.))
Unfamiliar whispers on the breeze. Her throat being grasped by invisible fingers so she could barely breathe - mostly because fear overwhelmed her, of course. Warm, sickeningly satisfying blood oozing into her mouth; she had felt it trickle down her lips like a drink of water.
And then her eyes were staring up at a blue sky to match her gaze. Birds were twittering in the trees around the lagoon, and the sun shone brightly. It was as if nothing odd had ever happened here...Maybe it had all just been a dream.
"Elise. Elise. Wake up."
She turned her head to see Rose staring down at her, shaking her shoulders insistently. A bad feeling suddenly pierced Elise; she had never seen her usually bold and brave sister look so unsure. Almost afraid.
"W...what?" she faltered groggily.
"It looks like we accidentally...uh, sleep-walked onto the, uh...raft..."
Elise sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She glanced around; the raft was in the same exact spot it had been in when she'd experienced her nightmare. It was like they'd been in the same place for hours on a raft of logs and mud that could've floated anywhere. A bit too strange for even Elise's perspective.
"So...so you think it was just a coincidence?" she was forced to ask, though she hadn't very much wanted to bring up her dream at all. "That I dreamt something bad happened here - well, not bad so much, but terrifying - and then we woke up in the exact same place I was in...no. No, the place we were in." She looked at Rose. "You were there, too. I don't know what's going on with me..."
Elise buried her face in her hands. Even her, always the first one to believe in the impossible and to say yes to what everyone else would claim didn't exist, had no idea what to think of this.

"Nothing happened!" Rose snapped, her voice faltering. "Nothing happened. We had the same dream. We sleep-walked onto the raft. The current stopped, which is why we didn't drift. Now let's just go back and forget this ever happens, okay?"
((I think my brain is dead. I'm hard-wired to making MVs now, cuz that's what I'm doing while you type. Don't ask me how they miraculously know that they had "the same dream." They just do. xD So...you're in charge of the actual writing this time. I'm a vegetable right now.

Nah...veggies suck. I'm a fruit.
NO! A COOKIE!))

((Rofl. xD All righty.))
Elise resisted gasping at Rose's sudden sharp tone. But at the same time her voice sounded weak, yet forced to not crack; like she was trying to be brave for her sister.
Elise sighed. "Fine," she mumbled. "Let's just go back." Picking up her oar and setting it into the water, she began to slowly veer the raft toward the entrance of the lagoon. She half-expected something horrifying to leap out at them before they got there, or for the gentle breeze to start whispering twisted words of danger. But nothing from her thoughts happened. They exited the lagoon safely - physically safe, that is. Inside, Elise was shattered; something had torn her. And the worst part was that she had no idea what had ripped her in the first place, and so therefore no knowledge of how to soothe her fear and silent anguish.
~*~
By the time they arrived back at the camp, Rose was asleep in a patch of sun like a feline. Elise raised an eyebrow at her sister and laughed; Rose wasn't really as tough as she let on to be, but she was braver and stronger than anyone Elise had ever known, and she respected her twin for that. But sometimes Rose just seemed too childish to bear. ((In a good way, as in cute. ^^))
She grabbed a flexible evergreen branch and pulled herself in. Fastening the raft's rope securely to the same evergreen, she stepped out into the shallow water and dipped her hands in. The clear liquid felt chill and refreshing against her bare palms. Cupping the water in her hands, she suddenly threw them up into the air, causing many sparkling water droplets to shower down onto Rose.
"So, it had to end the hard way?" Elise teased. "Now get up and help me make us some breakfast."
Knowing her sister was awake and would follow in a moment, she walked away toward the tent - but her mouth dropped when she laid eyes on their camp.
Everything from their tent to their backpacks was torn apart. Plastic bags were scattered here and there; a tin can that they had kept their money in was lying empty near the base of a large tree; all their belongings and supplies - toothbrushes, dolls, sleeping bags, pillows, even toilet paper - looked like they'd been massacred. And, in fact, that's exactly what happened.
Huge pawprints with pointed claws at the toes were printed everywhere in the mud. As the paws led off into the thicker part of the trees, a much smaller set accompanied them.
A mother bear and her cub... Elise thought to herself. Figures. I would've rather been cornered by a mountain lion than have everything we need ruined by an angry mama bear.
Taking one more moment to stare open-mouthed at their devastated camp, Elise turned around and screamed Rose's name. "We have a huge problem!" she shouted, not daring to start running for fear that the bear was still hiding somewhere, watching her.
Elise eyed a navy lunchbag near the shredded tent. They had to search for any remaining food or drink, that was really all that mattered. If they had truly lost everything to the infuriated mother bear, then they wouldn't have much time before hunger and dehydration took its toll...
She lunged for the lunchbag, hope flaring inside of her. But all the light died from Elise's eyes when she was met with nothing more than bits of dirt and tree bark inside. She and her sister had no food. It was clear the bear had eaten all the rest of it, and now their last source of food was empty. Their water bottles had been ripped to pieces, the twigs around the "remains" sodden with the water that had once filled the cups. They had no water, either. And drinking from the lake, with microscopic who-knew-whats infesting it, was way too risky.
"We have no food," Elise acknowledged aloud, falling to her knees. "No food, and no water..."
What were they supposed to do now?
((I made the whole bear thing happen so all their food would be gone, and they'd have to find an alternative to survive. *wink-wink* So when they see a man walking in the woods, vampire instincts kick in whether they like it or not - and even though they have no idea at all what's happening when they suddenly feel the urge to kill - and when they kill him and drink his blood, they realize that the lagoon incident wasn't just a dream and something's wrong with them. You can go ahead and decide whether or not they know they're vampires, or if they just think they're demented man-eaters now. Haha.))

((It wasn't a bear that tore up the camp. It was a pack of werewolves!))
Rose was having a pleasant dream about eating pickles when she heard Elise's shouting. She phased into conciousness and sat up.
"Elise! Elise! What the hell is the matter?" she called, irritated and grouchy. "Rose" and "sleep" were two words that belonged in the same sentance. "I'll give you ten seconds to shut up before I--"
"Rose! Our camp! It's--it's--"
"Ugh," she muttered. She stood up and ran over to the clearing behind a veil of trees, where the camp was located. But as soon as the curtain of leaves slipped away from her vision, the sight was horrifying.
Elise was examining their food bag. "We have no food," she cried as she fell to her knees, crestfallen. "No food, and no water..."
"You're kidding me," Rose breathed. "That--that's not f-fair..."
((Yeah, I'm still a brain-dead cookie. Can you kick off the murder scene for me?))

((Ooh, yesh. Werewolfies. >=]
Pickles?? xD))
Rose wasn't showing nearly as much misery as Elise was - for after all, Elise was never afraid to show how much something had "displeased her." But her sister was clearly shaken by the fact that they had nothing now.
She rose to her feet, not even bothering to brush herself off. Grabbing Rose's shoulders, Elise steered her in the direction of her face, so they were staring eye-to-eye.
"You're the tough one," she cried. "You figure this out! I'm just the scaredy-cat that hides in a corner while her sissy's doing the dirty work." She groaned, particularly at her own self, and leaned back against a tree. Though every second she caught glimpses of the devastation, she wasn't about to fully examine the awful ruins again. Just the thought of the way it looked now, and of all their things gone forever, seared her heart like a white-hot torch.
"Well...let's look on the bright side," she offered. Elise walked back over to Rose. "We still have the clothes on our backs, and my locket and your bracelet. I'd have died if I'd lost this necklace." She gently brushed the gold heart with her fingertips.
But a minute later, Elise had no idea what she was saying. There was no bright side!
"This is the worst thing that could possibly happen to us!" she gushed, her legs giving out so she was on her knees again, sobbing. "Fifteen crappy years of living with Dad - God, I can't even bear to call him that - and then four crappy days of living in the woods, and now a fifth crappy day to lift our spirits!" She got up and violently kicked a stray can, knocking it into a tree.
Elise jumped as she heard a gasp from beyond the bushes and leaves. Another human...Their luck was turning already!
"Rose, I hear someone!" she told her in a loud whisper. "Someone who could help us." Without waiting for her twin's reply, she darted behind a cluster of young trees and peered out from behind her cover.
A thin man with small glasses and thinning hair was glancing around nervously; he had heard the tin can hit the tree trunk, just as Elise had suspected. After just a moment, he continued walking along, occasionally tramping down hard on the ground as if trying to make a path.
So even if he leaves, he'll be able to find his way back to us! she thought to herself. Things were getting much better, just like they always did when shadows started creeping up. But Elise wasn't paying much attention now to their massive amount of luck, apart from the destruction of their camp.
Her tongue began to feel dry, longing for something - anything - to quench her thirst. Her stomach was rumbling, for she hadn't had any breakfast and probably wouldn't be eating for a while. A bead of saliva trickled down her chin. Embarrassed, though no one had seen her do it, Elise quickly wiped it away.
Suddenly, she began to feel fidgety and restless. She needed to move around. ((That sounds more like a werewolf, but whatever. xD)) Hunger was now overpowering her mind as she continued to stare at the man, thirst also tempting her at the same time. She had no idea what was happening to her, or how to stop it. But one thing was for sure; it was something she could tell instantly: she was different than she'd ever been before. She wasn't acting like the normal Elise, and that scared her.
Suddenly, against her own will, she screeched and leapt from her hiding spot. The man whirled around, face creased with terror as he saw her streaking toward him with gnashing teeth.
Elise was internally screaming, fighting back with all her strength, but no matter how hard she tried she couldn't stop herself. Almost demanding out loud for it to stop, she grabbed the man forcefully, and before she knew what was happening his shouts filled her ears and the taste of fresh blood filled her mouth.
((Dun dun duuuuuuun!))

Rose had been in a daze, swaying, not registering anything that happened. Her sister was the exact opposite, rambling on and on in hysterics, all of her words spilling and tripping over themselves. But now her senses were crystal clear, and all she could hear was screaming.
You can imagine her shock when she walked through the trees and the first thing she saw was a greater shock than the destroyed camp. Elise--soft, mild, kindly Elise--was kneeling beside a stranger whose throat had been torn open, with blood trickling down her chin.
Rose's lips parted to gasp, but she could not find the breath. She began to say, "Elise, what are you doing?" but something stopped her.
She walked over to her sister, whose countenance was stricken with guilt, confusion, and fear for what Rose's reaction would be.
"Elise..." Rose whispered. "...S-save some for me." And then she felt a sadistic smile ease onto her face.

((I repeat: Dun dun dun duuuuuuuuuun! Dun da da dun.))
Elise froze as she realized Rose was standing behind her. She suddenly imagined in her head what it must look like: your shy, quiet sister kneeling over a dead body, mouth covered in blood as the clear evidence of what had happened.
"Rose, I-I --"
Her twin cut her off, whispering, "Elise...S-save some for me."
For a moment, Elise was in shock. But almost instinctively she transitioned to being completely comfortable with the situation, as if events like this happened all the time between two sisters. She glanced down at the body hungrily.
"Well...dig in, I guess," she said weakly, yet at the same time with no hesitance. She bent down farther and sank her teeth into the man's flesh with surprising ease, like a tiger biting into a deer with its razor-sharp canines. The thought crossed her mind to feel her front teeth. She gently pressed onto them one at a time with her thumb - only to find them shockingly sharp. Since when had she grown her own pair of fangs? Overnight?
Turning to Rose, who was now crouched beside her in all eagerness to devour their prey - and how strange that sounded, "their prey," one of their own kind - she held her back with an extended arm.
"Rose?" Elise said in a voice barely above a whisper. "I-I...I think there's something wrong with us." She stared at her sister levelly, blue eyes glinting with fear. "The dream from Grandmother, a-and at the lagoon, how we thought that was just a dream too! Well, now something's very different." Her gaze slid to the dead man that she, Elise, had killed with a set of fangs that humans were not even supposed to have. Unless...they weren't human.
"No, that's ridiculous," she insisted aloud. "We're just as normal as ever." ((Ack, more power-playing.))
Rose raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, except we're getting ready to make this human man our lunch."
Elise whipped her head around. "Stop it!" she snapped. "We must've gone mental for a second or something. I mean, how can you be totally unaffected by being lost in the woods, unable to live in town, and then having everything you need to survive ruined?! We became desperate, that's all."
Rose looked unconvinced. "Way desperate."
Elise pursed her lips. Clenching her fists, she glared at her sister half with hate and half with fear. "No matter what you say to try and make this seem like a light situation, I refuse to believe that we're not all right." She got up and stormed away, staining her arm with blood as she wiped it away from her mouth.

"You're hungry too, aren't you?" The words were softly spoken, but the effect was as loud as they needed to be. ((Powerplaying time.)) Elise stopped walking.
"We--or should I say, you--'ve already killed him," Rose went on. "We might as well finish the job." She took a deep breath, piecing everything together in her mind, and continued. "I'm not going to waste any time with the 'what's happened to us' crap. We've all seen the movies and stuff, right? We're...we're vampires now. I don't know why or how, but we. Are. Vampires. Now let's just accept it."
Elise remained silent for a long time. Then, finally...((I'll leave the rest to you. ^^))

((Heehee.))
Elise's trembling lips parted, barely able to form words; she hadn't the first idea of how to put this together in her mind, let alone how to explain anything about it out loud. But she couldn't just remain silent until Rose was, once again, the braver one and spoke first.
She turned around and stared boldly at her sister. "Okay, then." Her voice cracked, and was as quiet as the night. "I guess you're right, we can't do anything about it so we should just accept it." Her words said one thing, but her thoughts said another to her inner self. Nevertheless, she was ready to put aside her feelings and live like the vampires she'd heard so much about in folktales - even tales about her own grandmother. It was the only way she and Rose could survive.
((Blech. No muse. -_- Sowwy.))
